Thid works practically the same as a real plasma ball (I think), there's gas particles slowly moving around inside the plasma ball, and the electric zaps always take the shortest possible route (or path of least resistance) to the outside of the ball.

This was quite good! It seems as though you have put a lot of effort into this piece of work, and it shows.

Even though it looks slightly.. off ( at least for me), interactive creations like this are hard to come by on Deviant-Art. It left quite an impact, although this is not the exact experience I have come to expect, it was certainly quite the piece of art!

To improve, I suggest adding a deeper level of interactivity, such as being able to control plasma etc. Overall, I definitely enjoyed this deviation, Supabyte! I hope you continue to keep up the good work!
What do you think?

Clearly it's on a 2 dimension plane, so making it click reactive in the front wouldn't work, but you could still make it follow the mouse around the outside of the ring.

Weren't those the zaps that followed your finger whenever you put it on the surface of the ball? Would be funny if that would work with the mouse :p

I'm afraid we're dealing with gas particles and not chemicals, so yay, Physics xD

Glad you like it. :)

Another well done simulation! I'm very impressed with how real this looks, and the particles were also well defined. Perhaps in the future, you could make an interactive version.

Thanks a lot! :) At first I thought it looked quite real, but after playing with a real plasma ball for a while, I realised the lines are too jaggedy. I might see if I can make a more realistic version at some stage, maybe even with some interaction. Thanks for the feedback. :]

This is awesome!
Did you use a particle engine for this?
Also, one thing that may make this a bit more realistic is to have energized particles increase in velocity a bit. ( Or just add a random velocity to them )
See, in a regular plasma ball, part of the movement is in the fact that the electricity heats up the gas, causing it to expand, so it has to move around to find the path of least resistance.

Thanks! I did all the physics myself, but I agree with everything you said, the only trouble for me is implementing it. :P

All the settings I chose seemed to give the best results for my current code, keeping in mind I wanted people to notice that sometimes multiple rays can join up. I didn't give the particles any interaction with eachother for performance purposes, but I figured that shouldn't really matter as I make them move around randomly.

As for finding the path of least resistance, how would you go about implementing that do you think? By attracting nearby particles towards the ray?

Gotta say, we've got a lot in common. You make the same kind of things I enjoy making, would you mind giving me some constructive critisism for a new game I'm developing? I could use a fresh pair of eyes to judge my work for once. :D Thanks.

Sorry, i worded that a bit ambiguously. By finding the path of least resistance, i meant that the electricity finds the nearest outward branching particle to go through. So basically, if a ray is on a particle, it would cause it to move mor quickly, as the heat makes the theoretical gas expand.

As for the game, i would love to help!

Ah I see, well coming to think of it, this simulation doesn't work much like a real plasma ball, but it's still pretty effective. I might give it another go when I have a bit more free time. :)

I'll note you about the game, thanks!

Really, you coded it? OF COURSE YOU DID, what a stupid question! Nobody's patient enough to make all of this manually! Seriously, you're really good at particle simulation.

Coding is the fastest and most fun way. :D Thanks, I enjoy simulating real life physics, it gives you a better understanding of the way these things work in real life, although this still needs a fair amount of improvement to be compared to a true simulation.
